What is this Powerhouse thing?

(Or for our Canadian friends: qu'est-ce que c'est que cette espèce de Powerhouse?)

"The Powerhouse" refers to the massive building at the corner of University Avenue and South 14th Street here in Oxford, MS which is scheduled to re-open in April 2006 as the home to the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council after an extensive (and delay-plagued) renovation.

It is called the Powerhouse because that is what it used to be: a Depression-era (1928) electric department building, formerly the home of Oxford Electric. Kind of like the Tate Modern. But not.

See architectural details here.

The renovated Powerhouse will include theater, gallery, and classroom space in addition to the YAC office.

And, (insert drumroll here) in February 2007, it will be the new home of the Oxford Film Festival! This year, with popcorn! Holla.....

While we appreciated the grandeur and glory of the University's Ford Center, we are looking forward to a more intimate space (one which will allow food and drink within the interior walls).
